Patch 3.1 Duel Spec
Guys as a hunter i am having second thought of payin 1000g to swtich bewteen 2 specs as i can onli really contribute from 1 at a time as all specs are dps - fair enough i know that mm can help the raid with true shot aura
and bm by my pet and so on will become better for single target but survivial has prob the best spec atm so i see no point in changin
do u?

Re: Patch 3.1 Duel Spec
Dual spec*
Duel would imply it was a spec for dueling... but yeah, I'm off topic already
Anyway, the major gains a hunter can get from duel spec is pvp based. Also, you may find that different specs behave differently in different encounters. As you mentioned, TSA is very useful, and MM will now have a bleed effect and Surv gets black arrow, etc etc. Ultimately, if you are focusing on PvE Solely, I imagine that only one spec is really needed. If you find another spec (like BM for instance) makes grinding easier (so you can just go afk and let your pet destroy everything) then it could be worth getting it, but if you only raid, then you probably only need 1 spec.
As an aside, with dual spec you also get dual glyphs, and this may prove to be more useful than the spec changes for classes whose sole purpose is dps. You could spec slightly differently and glyph differently for Mana regen, or for changes to damage groups (maybe you have talents that make you do more dps against certain targets, humanoids, beasts, etc).
Worst case scenario, you use your other spec to give you pathfinding (assuming it isn't in your raiding spec) so you can ride and aspect around quicker

Same issues
As a rogue Lissia has the same issue, though there is (possibly was) a difference in tactical application of the different specs, combat was better for non-boss mob (particularly when there were lots of them) while mutilate is better for boss fights.
So the really useful way for me to use it would be to switch before and after bosses and I've not fully investigated yet how the mechanic is working for inscribers (or if we have the needed skills in our raiding team). If the ability to change requires expendable reagents I can't see them happily setting it up 3 times per naxx wing
I may end up buying the dual spec just to have it. I think this ability is a massively useful tool for priest/druid/pally and some use for few others but nice not need for mage/hunter/rogue. Also I'm not sure if the changes from 3.1 have put combat on top. I guess I might wait for a little of the excitement to die down before getting concerned about it.

Re: Patch 3.1 Duel Spec
Just FYI
Currently: the change has a 3 second cast and is changable any time outside of combat.
(it also can't be changed in arenas or in bg's after the preperation period, but that's a fairly moot point as most people don't pvp much in our guild).

Re: Patch 3.1 Duel Spec
cheers for the posts guys =)
i think al just keep my hunter sv and save my self a 1000g as i see no point in doing others specs - tho what u said about me going afk as bm and my pet destroyin things - sadly blizz wreck tht as you as the hunter needs to tag it - kinda shitty as i could get prob 3 levels a day by grinding
but for my druid leveling i have it as tank and healer so questin is easy now - just go feral and instances i am a healer tho can switch and tank thank you blizz - you assholes !!!

Re: Patch 3.1 Duel Spec
You've always had to tag something as a hunter in order to get the kill or the loot. That's why clever hunters don't put their pets on aggressive in low level instances when running twinks/low levels/alts through. With BM, though, you just don't need to output the same sorta damage as with the other specs in order to achieve the same result. Auto attack and a sting or two, combined with your pet, will down a mob your own level quite easily. Bit harder for Surv/MM hunters who need to actually shoot a little more when grinding/questing.
But yeah, 1k gold does perhaps seem a bit much for just that

Re: Patch 3.1 Duel Spec
It also allows you to walk around Dalaran with an ooze or a bug or something as your pet... not everyone is into the whole cosmetics of WoW, but if you like the idea of getting a BM pet to match your current gear or something, then Dual Spec is for you

Re: Patch 3.1 Duel Spec
Well i got dual specs for very little else other than i like variety.
After a hard day of Dot DoT DoT, its occasionally nice to make something blow up in a ball of fire with a 15k conflag crit .
